   What is Mainframe ?

• Mainframe is a High performance Multi User computer system which is the most scalable, available, reliable and secured machine in the world capable of performing some Million Instructions per second (upto 569,632 MIPS) with the following characteristics:
   
  1) Reliable single-thread performance, which is essential for reasonable operations against a database.
  2) Maximum I/O connectivity, which means mainframes excel at providing for huge disk farms.
  3) Maximum I/O bandwidth, so connections between drives and processors have few choke-points.
  4) Reliability--mainframes often allow for "graceful degradation" and service while the system is running.
                                Applications of mainframe various from computing the Random number series to census, industry and consumer statistics, ERP and financial transaction processing..  
   
•  It is a Large Computers which is mainly made up with frames, All frames are put together is called mainframe.

                                          2.Cpu Component
                                          3.Main Memory Component
    Device Control Component :-- 

•  It is to control devices, devices are Auxiliary devices which are Disk,Tape.
• Auxiliary Storage devices a re used to store large volume of data permanently.

                    Printers :-- Are used to print data.
                    Terminals :-- Which are PC
    
    CPU Component :-- It Is to Process instruction.
    Main Memory Component :-- It is to Store Low Volume Of Data.

   How to Connect To Mainframe ?

• There are 2 things required to Connect to Mainframe Server

                                       1. Internet Connection
                                       2. Emulator :-- It is a Special Software which to connect to mainframe Server.

    Types Of Application :--
                 
              Any Mainframe Application Is Mainly Divided into 2 Types
                             1.Batch Prcessing :-- Single Task Environment.
                             2.Online Processing :-- Multi Task Environment

• Single-Tasking :-- In a Single  Task Environment only 1 Program can be executed concurrently that is a series of programs a re executed in a sequential order.

• Multi-Tasking :-- where multiple programs can be executed simultaneously  that is resources are allocated to multiple programs at a time.

     Types Of Programs :--

                 There are 2 types of Progrsms
          
           1. Batch Programs  [ Cobol, Cobol + Db2, Cobol + Vsam, Cobol + Db2 +Vsam ]
           2.Online Programs [ Cobol + Cics,Cobol + Db2 +Cics,Cobol + vsam +Cics,Cobol + Db2+vsam +Cics ]
